Tour Details (1 PDH)
Prior to our Annual meeting with meal, we have arranged a tour of the new USM Portland Campus Development Project, just off I-295 in Portland:
- The Portland Commons will be the second largest Passive House building on any college campus in the United States.
- The Portland Commons is the first residence hall on the Portland campus and will house 580 students starting this Fall. The rooms range from singles with an ensuite bathroom to four-person single apartments.
- The McGoldrick Center for Career and Student Success is built to LEED Gold standards, and incorporates cross-lam and glu-lam timbers throughout.
- The McGoldrick Center will house the University’s Career and Employment Hub, Dining Services, a Pub, the University Store, and Student Affairs staff and student lounges.
- The two buildings combined will anchor and give definition to the east end of campus, while creating a student life quad and replaces a large surface parking lot with roughly an acre of greenspace.
- Across the street a new 503-space parking garage will complement the project. Being the first parking structure built under the City of Portland’s green new deal and energy stretch codes, there will be 58 Electric Vehicle charging spaces, with the infrastructure in place to support an additional 42 spaces.
- The garage also includes a secure bike storage room for 250 bicycles as well as a bike maintenance area.

Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center
Thursday, October 20 at 3 pm
The Maine Society of Professional Engineers will host a tour at the Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center in Biddeford on Thursday, October 20. The one-hour tour will start at 3 p.m. Please be sure to arrive a few minutes early.
Following the tour will be dinner and a board meeting at The Run of the Mill Public House & Brewery (Pay for your own meal).
The new $60 million Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center, which began operation in June 2022, provides up to 12 million gallons of high-quality drinking water a day to Saco Bay communities. The center replaces the original Biddeford Water Treatment Plant, first constructed in 1884 when Chester Arthur was president and before Biddeford had access to electricity. It was located entirely in the 100-year flood plain of the Saco River making it vulnerable to service interruptions from catastrophic flooding. The original plant served the community for 138 years. The Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center is designed to provide another century of reliable service.
This tour is a free event, available to Members of MeSPE as well as non-member PE’s.
